Issue Five will be out August 1st, 2008.
We are currently reading for this issue. We will be reading for this issue until July 1st, 2008. Work after 7/1/08 will be considered for our December 2008 issue (issue six).
SUB-LIT isn’t an uptight rag. Sure, we want your best work, but we also appreciate originality, derisiveness, decisiveness, and most importantly, dissidence. Is your work experimental, focused on a less-than-mainstream topic, or reflective of counterculture? Good. We’ve read and enjoyed Alice Munro, Raymond Carver, and Ernest Hemingway, but we don’t want their imitators. We want new, exciting, funny, or even shocking work--give us writing that comes from the gut.
Fiction submissions:
Incorrectly formatted submissions will not be read, so follow directions carefully!
We accept short stories, drabble, flash fiction, and anything else you can come up with. We are flexible on word count, but will have a hard time finding room for work of 7000 words or more--no one wants to look at a screen for that long. If you’re interested in submitting a novel or novella excerpt, query first. Otherwise, follow the directions below.
Submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter (in the body of the email), and should be attached as. rtfs or. docs only. Send only one story at a time, and make sure to address your work to fiction@sub-lit.com. Subject lines should be formatted in the following manner: fiction submission/title/author/word count. Do not embed stories within the email, and make sure your contact info is included in both the body of the email and on your story’s first page.
Poetry:
Your poetry should sound like it was written today or, preferably, tomorrow. All forms are welcome, though light or inspirational verse will not be considered. Brevity is highly regarded. As Frank O'Hara said, "forced feeding leads to excessive thinness (effete)." Submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter in the body of the email. Submit three to five poems at a time and attach them seperately as .docs or .rtfs only. Do not attach any poems as .docx files, and do not embed poems within the email. The name of the file should your last name and the title of the poem. Subject lines should contain your first and last name along with something relating to poetry and submission. Please do not query regarding your submission. We’ll get back to you, promise. Just be patient. Any violations of these guidelines will result in your poems not being considered and you being hunted down and slaughtered by a pack of wolf-wielding gypsies. All submissions should be addressed to poetry@sub-lit.com
Creative nonfiction:
We’re open to just about anything, whether it be memoir, humor, essay--don’t be afraid to submit a piece that defies genre. Creative nonfiction should not = boring, so give us work that is deftly narrated, vividly written, and focused on story, whatever the subject matter. Creative nonfiction submissions may be as short as you like, but should not exceed 7000 words. For excerpts from larger work, query first. Otherwise, simply address your submission to nonfiction@sub-lit.com. Make sure to include a cover letter that includes your contact information, and format your email subject line as follows: nonfiction/title/author/word count.
Art:
We’re open to just about anything, so long as it's good. We are especially interested in forms that aren't often taken "seriously," such as tattooing/flash, comics, etc. We especially encourage photography. Our aesthetic is “edgy,” but that’s certainly open to interpretation, so don’t be afraid to submit your piece. You may submit as many pieces as you like, but please confine them to a single email. Submit the artwork as a .jpg, attach a cover letter, and direct it to amberbrooks@gmail.com.
