SUB-LIT FAQ

Q: Do you pay?

A: No. But feel free to pay us.

Seriously, we’d love to pay authors, and will certainly consider the option as our magazine grows. For now, we will send you SUB-LIT stickers, and will promise to never, ever drunk-dial you.

Q: What is literary dissidence, anyway?

A: We want inventive, exciting work. SUB-LIT’S editors are frustrated by the lack of diversity in many mainstream literary journals, particularly those that seem afraid to publish writing that is daring in subject matter, form, or tone. Publishing should not be an academic circle jerk, or a realm where blandness is encouraged.

That said, we want literature, not genre. Fantastical elements (or form blending) are fine, but make sure the work moves beyond those elements to explore the human experience.

Q: Do you take simultaneous submissions?

A: Yes, but please let us know that you’re submitting elsewhere, and inform us if your work is accepted.

Q: How long will it take you to get back to me?

A: We do our best to respond in less than two months.

Q : What publication rights do you assume?

A ;  For written work, we assume internet publication rights--that is, we assume the right to publish online. By agreeing to this, you are agreeing not to publish  A) the same submitted and and accepted work online with another journal, or B) in some other public online format. This is becoming standard for online journals. We do not assume any print rights, but we do assume the right to archive your work within our journal. We only assume the rights to the specific piece you submit to us.

Artists: we assume the right to archive your work on our website. We don’t mind if it exists in other online formats, but try not to send us stuff that’s plastered all over the internet.
